Yoga and mobility
Yoga Calorie Estimates Depend on What the Class Contains
Yoga has no single calorie rate because breathing practice, held postures and continuous movement are different activities. Standard adult reference values distinguish several formats, but cannot measure your individual class. State the format, duration, body mass and formula before comparing estimates, and keep room temperature separate from measured movement intensity.
Match the session before choosing a reference
How many calories does yoga burn is a question about a particular session, not every activity sold as yoga. A class may combine an introduction, movement, pauses, breathing and quiet time. Giving the whole booking the value of its most demanding sequence can distort the estimate.
The 2024 Compendium’s yoga entries are classifications. They do not certify a studio’s use of terms such as flow, gentle or power. A title can help you ask questions, but a useful match requires understanding what the teacher actually includes.
Published formats are separate entries
The adult reference lists general yoga and Hatha at 2.3 METs, Vinyasa at 2.7, hot yoga at 3.0 and power yoga at 4.0. It also contains other, more specific entries. Those numbers describe reference categories; they are not a measured ranking of the classes near you.
The table below fixes a hypothetical body mass at 70 kg and time at 30 minutes. It uses gross kcal = MET × kilograms × hours, so 30 minutes is 0.5 hour. The result is rounded, and the selected category is assumed to describe the entire period.
| 2024 category | MET | 70 kg for 30 minutes |
|---|---|---|
| General yoga / Hatha | 2.3 | 81 gross kcal |
| Vinyasa | 2.7 | 95 gross kcal |
| Hot yoga | 3.0 | 105 gross kcal |
| Power yoga | 4.0 | 140 gross kcal |
A heated room does not supply the missing measurement
A hot class is not automatically equivalent to the power category or the reference’s separate high-intensity Hatha entry. Heat, pace, posture selection and time spent moving are different features. The presence of sweat does not tell you which MET entry fits.
A studio may call a mixed class hot fusion while combining yoga with other methods. Resolve the format instead of assigning a yoga value to the whole session by default. If the content cannot be matched reasonably to a reference, an unexplained calorie claim adds little useful information.
The clock needs an honest boundary
Consider a 60-minute booking with 10 minutes of explanation before movement begins. Counting the whole hour as continuous movement changes the question. Conversely, deleting all quieter parts and then calling the result a full-class total is also misleading.
A segmented model is possible only when the segment descriptions and durations are known. It should show those assumptions openly, rather than creating an unofficial yoga category with an apparently authoritative number. Class length and active movement time can both be recorded without pretending they are identical.
If another calculator differs slightly, check its conversion convention before concluding that the class changed. Oxygen-based MET arithmetic can produce a result about five percent higher than the simplified convention used here. That is a formula difference, before individual uncertainty is considered.
Choose a class for its content and access
The adult table is intended for ages 19–59. The Compendium specifically warns that standard METs do not establish precise individual expenditure. Differences in physiology and how a class is performed remain even when the label matches.
A calorie table cannot tell you whether you can access the floor, see the demonstration, hear the explanation or follow the teacher’s level system. These practical details are often more useful for choosing a class than small differences between model outputs.
Keep calorie terminology clear if you compare apps: the table uses gross energy during the stated period, including its resting component. It neither estimates weight loss nor sets a personal activity target.
Frequently asked questions
Does hot yoga always burn more than other yoga?
No. A heated room does not define movement intensity or duration. The Compendium has separate hot, power and other yoga categories; a studio label does not verify a category match.
How many calories are in the 30-minute example?
At a hypothetical 70 kg, the listed formats produce about 81–140 gross kcal. Those conditional calculations are not a personal prediction.
Are these numbers appropriate for every older adult?
No. These are adult-reference illustrations for ages 19–59. The separate older-adult reference and individual estimation limits matter.
